Week 4, Question 1
Growing up in America diversity is all around you. You attend school with kids from different countries and practice different cultural norms. “Diversity describes the reality of our national and world community that is made up of people having cultures, languages, and social customs different from our own.” (Harris & Sherblom) I think that growing up in the world today makes it easier to accept and value diversity. Back in the early 1900’s and through the middle of the 1900’s diversity was something that people didn’t want to accept. We saw this with the struggle of integration. Now I think people have a new respect for diversity and all the new ideas that people have to offer. I think that if people in groups, such as a work place, try and see all of the new ideas and value someone can bring to the group they will value diversity a little more. People need to become more open minded about the things they don’t know about.

Great post! It is very true that living in America we do witness first hand the beauty that is diversity. It is interesting to note that modern day America is so diverse and a symbol for that especially with an African-America President, but just a century ago it was not so. School in America is not always as diverse as you and I grew up in. Families with higher income levels have the capability to privatize their children's education and I am certain that those schools are not as diverse as we are acustom to. Diversity is at the very root of America with almost all of our population immigrating from around the world..
ReplyDeleteI think our generation is very lucky to have been born when we were. We have been raised, for the most part, in a very diverse world. In America, unlike most places, every day you will run into people of all different walks of life and that is what makes living here so amazing. I agree by bringing in people of different backgrounds to our group will keep us open minded and keep us pushing forward to a life where diversity is even more accepted then it is today. Being open minded is sometimes hard because it is stepping into an unknown to most people and taking in others ways is hard but it can only help our communication ways.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this post, how you related the chapter’s diversity question to something we can all relate to was a great way to show how diversity can be a great asset to small groups. Historically it was harder to find diverse groups, unlike today where we have grown up with nearly all cultures in ethnicity sharing a classroom with us at sometime. We have made great strides in accepting new people and their ideas; still a lot needs to be done before diversity is an automatic plus to a group, instead of a distraction. People work better now in diverse groups because our classrooms going through school have been more and more diverse.
