Week 4, Question 2
To a certain extent I agree with the concept “white men of privilege.” Through the history of the United States it is shown that being white and a male has more perks than being a man of color. While the United States was developing into the country that it is today you were able to achieve more if you were a white male because you were presented with more opportunities. You were more likely to be literate, well educated, and a land-owner if you were a white male. Today this is not the case. People of different races and ethnicities are presented with the same opportunities as any other person in this country. Today there are many successful men and women of color and ethnicity. Take president Obama as an example. He has overcome a long history of doubt to get where he is today. I feel that this country is starting to move away from the concept of “white men of privilege” to more of an equal opportunity to all.

I agree with you completely. I almost forgot about the biggest barrier we as a society have passed, which is a African American man as our commander in chief. Who would have thought that one day we would have a black man running and even a woman. Our country has progressed, and “white men of privilege” does not really apply to us now.
ReplyDeleteSome people may still feel like White men are still more of an advantage, but change takes time, which is where we have been and are heading to. We all can attend the same schools and ride the same bus.
I agree with your post that white men of privilege is not longer the case in the United States. Throughout the years we have grown as a nation and have overcome so many obstacles. Yet, there is still many more to overcome. I liked that you mentioned President Obama. When first reading about white privilege his presidency did not even cross my mind. Although I don't consider my self all that political, I did enjoy the fact that an African America was elected as commander in chief. I think it gave a strong sense of hope to people who never would have imagined this happening during our generation. Even if one does not like Obama, he gave millions of people hope and change we as a country desperately needed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the post very much. I also agree with the “white man of privilege” notion that the book talks about. But I think it is outdated and agree with you when you say it is not the case. I think that everyone is presented with the same opportunities when it comes to school all the way to job opportunities. And like you say again there is proof in this because you can see all the successful people that are doing it. There are people of all different races doing all different kind of things and I don’t think it is dominated by the white male anymore.
