Week 12, Question 3
One concept from chapter 15 that I thought was really interesting was group performance in CMC. CMC groups perform differently than groups who work together face to face. "CMC has been shown to facilitate active participation and collaboration among team members and to increase the equality of participation among group members." (Harris & Sherblom) When people are involved in a CMC group they tend to make more of an effort to collaborate with their group and show more interactivity. I thought that concept was really interesting. I would have thought that it was the other way around. I would think that people that are in a face to face group would be more actively involved. I know that when I am in a group online I do worry about the work I have to do and I make sure that I get it done on time if not earlier and I am in constant communication with my group members.

It's funny I thought when I read that cmc members make more effort to be interactive, I thought it would be the other way around also, but in a way it's pretty understandable. A shy person can communicate equally online, as an extroverted person and thus more people interact. Think of being in a group it seems a couple leaders step up, you have a few quiet, a few cliques and a few goofy members, it's funny it usually turns out this way. CMC seems to have a lot of benefits to ftf communication. I liked your posting it's a lot like my take on it :)
ReplyDeleteI loved your posting this week and I had much of the same thoughts and questions about CMC as you did. Finding out that CMC groups work and preform better together then face to face groups was really a shock to me. I thought by seeing the people and having the direct interaction, a group would bond and become stronger and have a deeper understanding of each other. But after listening to the point about CMC and how group members are more open to speaking how they really feel, things made a little more sense. There are times when I am put in that horrible random group in class that I’m sometimes not able to say my full thought with fear I will be rejected with my ideas. With CMC we are able to say what we want and almost hide from the answer.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely make a good point. It would make sense for F2F groups to be more active with each other, but at the same time I can understand why computer groups do. One, I think it is easier to be heard, or at least, to express your opinion. If it is easier to express your opinion and you feel like you're going to be heard, then certainly you are going to actively try to participate. And I have to agree with Little Miss Cheerleader about being placed in completely random groups F2F... It can be awkward, and if time is limited, I'm probably not going to fully "come out of my shell" in fear of how I might get rejected or how other people will perceive my ideas. A lot of times with CMC, we don't have those restraints because we are less connected physically and emotionally.
