Week 2, Question 3
Feedback is an essential part of small group communication. Feedback helps to make a group live up to its full potential. “A group must pay attention both to feedback that it receives from its larger environment in the form of its initial charge and directions and to the response to its presentations.” The response that a small group receives from its audience will help make it stronger. Positive feedback is a way of encouraging creativity among the group and will help to make the group stronger. It also encourages different ways of thinking and encourages appreciation. Negative feedback is harmful to a small group because it can cause a reduction in productive work. It can also cause people not to voice any new ideas, which can cause damage to the work of the group. I have always though that feedback was very important to not only a group but to an individual as well, especially positive feedback. Hearing positive thoughts and suggestions helps to make a small group or individual stronger with their work.

I agree that feedback a necessary part of small group communications and although I agree that positive feedback will produce a more positive reaction then negative feedback I don't agree that negative feedback is harmful to small group communications. As long as a group recognizes the negative feedback as something that can be fixed to better their group as a whole and not take it as an offensive remark, then negative feedback can indeed be helpful and proactive to small group communications. Negative feedback can also result in a more productive and efficient line of work if addressed properly.
ReplyDeleteHi Commgirl141,
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you that feedback is not only important to small groups, but to an individual as well. I think that feedback is beneficial because it gives you a second opinion and different perspective on things. Not everyone thinks the same, so interpretations and reactions also vary. Hearing feedback from your audience or other groups can help improve the message or solution. However, I have always thought of feedback as something like a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it is meant to be helpful and outside views can help you pinpoint flaws that could be improved. But on the other hand, I have noticed and experienced myself, hurt feelings when you open yourself up to feedback. Some people may take it personally and find feedback to be more critical than constructive. I guess allowing feedback can be taken as putting yourself in a vulnerable position. Overall though, I think that feedback, whether it be positive or negative, is meant to help you or your group do better. It is in how you choose to interpret the feedback that can set you back or improve your product.
