Week 9, Question 3
The concept that I choose to discuss this week is the concept of motivation because I think that a lot of people, especially students, lack motivation when it comes to listening. The class textbook says that no one can become a better listener without the motivation to do so. I completely agree with this statement. The only way someone is going to become a better listener is if they want to and they actually try. Although, people don't want to admit it we are all a little selfish. We always think what's in it for me? Having the motivation to actively listen has a greater payoff in the end. When you actively listen because you want to you learn new things, have life-changing experiences, and you can build relationships. Having the motivation to improve you listening skills and actually doing it make you a better employee. Listening skills is something that employers values so that is something to keep in mind.

Good job on your post! I like how you chose the concept motivation because it is a very inspiring concept that many of need at times. Just like when you stated “that a lot of people, especially students, lack motivation when it comes to listening.” This is very true, because without motivation many things in life wouldn’t get done. I agree with your statement saying that “we are all a little selfish” because it is very true. We don’t like to listen or do things that aren’t going to benefit us because we hate to be taken advantage of and also dislike listening to things that aren’t going to benefit us, but the fact of the matter is listening benefits us in many ways.
ReplyDeleteMotivation is very important. without the will to do something then it will not get done. students, just like you, say often lack the motivation to be successfull. i think that people are not willing to put the time and hard work into the material to earn a great grade. American culture breeds people to be selfish. in order to acheive the american dream you have to rise and look out for yourself. a chairty supervisor or a job that is selfless is not really the ideal position in the american dream. motivation is something that needs to remain a priority to thsoe in attempts to listen actively. great post!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and the book about motivation. It is hard to listen to something if you do not have the drive and interest for it. Motivation is a strong factor in doing anything. When I find myself in an uninteresting class, I find something to focus and motivate myself. Motivation is definitely up to individuals. It is not something anyone can instill in you because motivation is not something you can simply pick up on. It has to be something that comes from yourself and drives your goals. I agree with you that active listening is beneficial because you can learn things that you would not have known otherwise. To learn to be a good and active listener can be applied both in school and later on in your career.
